Happy Birthday to Ian this Labor Day!
Yes we did survive the entire week on our own! Though my domestication training is still progressing; one important tactic is NOT to shop at Walmart the last day of the month! Everyone else is too.
Mom ordered a 'Purple bed' to replace the nice pillow top one we have been sleeping on. Or perhaps I should say I was sleeping on. She doesn't have enough hip padding and part way through the night she would wonder off to the new twin mattress that is much more comfortable for her. The new bed was scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday; so that morning I washed the sheets, removed the mattress and with help from Sandy, got it downstairs. I even moved the box spring and frame and vacuumed the floor underneath. And then the bed did not arrive! Not like we don't have enough beds in the house, so I slept downstairs. The bed was delivered the next day and we managed to get it upstairs and properly installed. The good news: Sandy has been able to sleep the entire night on this mattress, although I am still evaluating it's comfort.
This week I have spent some of my mornings cutting up the last fallen tree; this one was only 20 inches at the base, but was tall. Interesting, but all three of the fallen trees had one thing in common: at the base the trunk was hallow, which weakened the tree. Yesterday I used the tractor to haul it over to the splitting pile. So until the next strong wind storm, all the downed trees are cut. But there are at least three dead standing trees that will need attention before long. This is the pile of wood we will be tackling tomorrow:
Sandy had another appointment with the oncologist Wednesday afternoon. She had several questions about Erbitux, the immunotherapy drug she is a candidate for which he was able to answer to her satisfaction. Minimal side effects, prolonged life. She is seriously considering trying it out and see how she feels. The two devices that were loaned to her last week seem to be helping her. She was able to contact an 'expert' with the bio-mat and another 'expert' on the Bemer and is now set up with a protocol for each. She is very dedicated to following this regimen. Not surprising, it is her health and life at stake. But in the short time she has been using these two, I have seen an increase in attitude and energy. Moral is high and more positive results are coming!
There was an elder's quorum service project Saturday for an older couple in the ward; we had over 25 young men and not so young participate. The yard had a case of severe neglect for years and was overgrown. Their ministering elders just were not capable to do the job themselves; oh, they are both over 75! The yard is all gravel, front and back, except for the flower beds. We hauled off multiple trailer loads of brush. We were complete in three hours and the house looks so much better. Similar to a young man with shoulder length hair getting a high and tight!
Friday afternoon we went to the local theater to watch 'Christopher Robin', a most delightful family friendly movie. Christopher is grown, married and has a daughter, but is so wrapped up in his work he is neglecting them. And then Pooh comes along and helps him get his priorities straight. I bought some popcorn, but was not very hungry; Sandy ate most of it! She is getting better.
Miranda bought us some more peaches this week. Dan brought them to a missionary meeting in West Plains and the sister missionaries delivered them to our house. So, I canned 7 quarts of peach slices. I prefer making jam; since the peaches get crushed into small pieces, there is no worry about carefully peeling the skin and then carefully slicing the peaches into nice neat wedges. So my peach slices won't win any prizes for appearance. But they should taste good just the same.
Miranda and family spent part of the weekend at Andy's. They left early this morning to join us for church and brought Charlotte and Matthew with them. Some of today's pictures:
Grandma and Camden playing Connect 4.
Rachel reading a book.
Charlotte reading.
Miranda, Ethan, Charlotte and Matthew.
Matthew is hiding behind Rachel.
Andy with Katie holding Rachel.
Andy arrived later with the remaining three children. This is all in preparation of the log splitting activity scheduled for Labor Day. The sisters also volunteer to come help. Hopefully we can get the all the logs split before the family helpers need to split for home.
Katie has kept the Fox tradition by making fudge and Dan has the 7 layer dip ready to go for tonight's game of 5 Crowns!
Hope you have a great week!
Tom and Sandy
